A line in its simplest form is a device that demarcates a section of space, creating form. Beyond Lines invites the viewer to reflect on the intense emotion that the humble line drawing can achieve by exploring four different emotional states; Joy, Sorrow, Beauty and Reflection.
The unifying theme of the works is their use of simple lines. Rather than detracting from the mastery of the oeuvres, the viewer is treated to a very intimate experience. By dispensing with traditional modes of representations, the artists expose their technique, affording the works a sense of honesty and humility.
The exhibition offers not only the joy of these delicate compositions, but a chance to look at some of the prints and drawings from the Gallery’s holdings that seldom get public exposure. The artists chosen for Beyond Lines are major figures in Australian art community. Moreover, the Art Gallery of New South Wales already recognised their artistic merit by holding important collections of their works.
Beyond Lines is designed to appeal to different demographics. The frank depiction of the artworks are easily accessible to an audience with a limited art background. Additionally, the art aficionado is treated to a rare glimpse into works that expose the psyche of these high profile artists.
This exhibition serves as a starting point to other sections of the Gallery. The labelling used for Beyond Lines can include information about other paintings by the same artist, pointing specifically to works in the permanent collection. Such an accessible exhibition is the ideal way to introduce the fledgling art lover (both young and old!) to the works that the AGNSW has to offer.
